Gold weekend gaps, rollover and market close
What happens around daily rollover and the weekend close, and why spreads can change or gold can reopen with a gap.
Answer first
What should you remember?
- Gold has a weekend close despite near-24-hour weekday trading.
- Spreads can widen around daily maintenance.
- A stop cannot guarantee a price through a gap.
Actual trading hours
XAUUSD trades for most weekday hours but has a daily maintenance break and a weekend closure from Friday into the next trading week. Exact times vary by broker and daylight saving, so use your symbol specification rather than a fixed internet timetable.
Why rollover spreads widen
Liquidity can thin as the trading day rolls and institutions update pricing and financing, widening spreads or briefly pausing quotes. A scalp or extremely tight stop in this window may be affected without any real directional change.
The weekend gap
If news or expectations change while the market is closed, the first available price can differ from Friday's close. Not every gap must fill, and stops may execute worse than requested. Size for that possibility or close exposure if the plan cannot carry it.
Deciding whether to hold
Review scheduled events, stop distance, total exposure and the trade's state before close. Never turn a scalp into a weekend position to avoid a small loss. Holding should belong to a documented swing model defined before entry.

Frequently asked questions
Does every gold gap close?
No. Some gaps fill while others begin a new repricing; treat a gap as context, never a guarantee.
Can close times change?
Yes, by broker, daylight saving and holidays; check the XAUUSD schedule in your own platform.
